Neil Welliver in the back room of Driscoll Babcock
I love Neil Welliver and was totally stoked to happen upon a
chance encounter with one of his woodland marsh landscapes in the back room of
Driscoll Babcock. I can’t say much about
anything else in the gallery because it was all outshone by the huge (8x8 ft)
square Marsh Shadow! Welliver’s work is so amazing because it is
all so deceptively simple! The use of
flat color as light and shape along with perfect rendering and fluid
brushstrokes, not to mention, the gloriously beautiful landscapes of northern
Maine, make my landscape painter heart skip beats! The images are so modern and accessible but
iconic and timeless. This is one stellar
example of Welliver’s work.
